Tips to brewing better coffee

Regardless of the coffee gear you choose, like cooking, brewing really good coffee requires a recipe, so here are some tips to get your home brewing off to a strong start.

  1. Buy really good coffee, ours preferably 😉 Seriously, not all coffee is created equal, so invest in quality coffee when you can.

  2. Be precise: Use a digital scale, yes like any other recipe, its a science as much as an art. A good rule of thumb is 15g of coffee to 250ml of water for most filter brew methods.

  3. Grind the coffee for the brew method you plan to use and as close to the time of brewing as possible, however If you dont have a grinder, dont fret, speciality coffee roasters use some pretty high end equipment, so the quality of grind you get from buying pre-ground often outweighs any freshness you lose from the increased surface area.

  4. Use filtered water or neutral pH mineral water, correcting the mineral balance of tap water will prolong the life of your brewing equipment and make the coffee taste so much better

  5. Use water 92-94°/198-200F to brew.

  6. The ratio (coffee:water) in the guides are for optimum results, but feel free to play around!

  7. If coffee takes longer than suggested brew time indicated, your grind is too fine and may be bitter.

  8. If it goes much faster than the recommended brew time, your grind is too coarse and coffee may taste sour and weak.
